Pizza: A Spooky and Suspenseful Thriller
Pizza is a 2012 Tamil-language supernatural mystery thriller film written and directed by debutant Karthik Subbaraj. The story is about a pizza delivery boy named Michael who lands in a mysterious predicament, and how it affects his life. Michael does not believe in the supernatural but is afraid of anything paranormal. Anu, his girlfriend, is an aspiring novelist researching material for a horror story. Anu keeps telling him that he will soon realise the presence of supernatural beings. At first, Michael is confused and scared, and his fears are confirmed when he discovers that a spirit possesses his boss, the Pizzeria owner Shanmugam's daughter. Meanwhile, Anu becomes pregnant, and after a brief altercation, Michael and Anu get covertly married.
One particular day, Michael goes out to deliver a pizza to a customer and returns to the restaurant in shock while covered in blood; he keeps muttering Anu's name, seemingly worried about her. When his boss questions him, Michael explains that he had been to deliver a pizza to a customer named Smitha in a bungalow and recounts the events at the place. Smitha requests Michael to wait downstairs while she goes upstairs to get money for the pizza. Almost immediately, the power goes out, alarming Michael. While waiting downstairs, Michael hears a loud unidentifiable noise from the bedroom upstairs.
Curious and scared, Michael goes upstairs to check on Smitha. He finds her lying dead on the bed with her throat slit. He also sees a ghostly figure standing near the window. Terrified, he runs downstairs only to find that the main door is locked from outside. He tries to call his boss and Anu from his mobile phone but there is no signal. He then notices a landline phone and tries to call from it but it does not work either. He realises that he is trapped in the haunted house with no way out.
As he explores the house, he encounters various paranormal phenomena such as moving objects, flickering lights, ghostly apparitions, and eerie sounds. He also finds a diary that belongs to Smitha's husband Ramkumar, who was a novelist working on a horror story based on his own experiences with the supernatural. Ramkumar had committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan after being tormented by the ghosts in the house.
Michael also learns that Smitha was having an affair with her neighbour Raghavan, who was also involved in occult practices. Raghavan had killed Smitha after she refused to elope with him and then hanged himself from the same fan as Ramkumar. The ghosts of Ramkumar, Smitha, and Raghavan were haunting the house and seeking revenge on anyone who entered it.
Michael manages to escape from the house after breaking a window and running away from the ghosts. He reaches his bike and tries to start it but it does not work. He then sees Anu's bike parked nearby and takes it to go back to his home. He calls Anu on the way and tells her that he loves her and that he is coming home.
However, when he reaches his home, he finds it empty and dark. He calls out for Anu but there is no response. He then sees a note on the table that reads "I am leaving you". He also finds Anu's pregnancy test kit which shows negative result. He realises that Anu had lied to him about being pregnant and had left him for someone else.
He then hears a knock on the door and opens it to find his boss Shanmugam standing outside with a gun in his hand. Shanmugam reveals that he had planned everything along with Anu to kill Michael and take his money and property. Anu was Shanmugam's daughter who had seduced Michael into marrying her without his knowledge.
Shanmugam also reveals that he had hired actors to play the roles of Smitha, Ramkumar, Raghavan, and the ghosts in the bungalow. He had rigged the house with cameras, speakers, wires, props, and special effects to create a convincing horror scenario for Michael. He had also jammed Michael's phone and cut the landline connection to isolate him. He had locked the main door and the bike to prevent him from escaping. He had also planted the diary and the note to manipulate Michael's emotions.
Shanmugam then shoots Michael in the chest and leaves him to die. He calls Anu and tells her that their plan was successful and that they can now enjoy Michael's wealth. Anu, who is waiting in a car outside, congratulates her father and tells him that she will meet him soon.
However, as Shanmugam walks towards the car, he is suddenly hit by a speeding truck and dies on the spot. Anu sees this and screams in horror. She then sees Michael's ghost standing near the car with a smile on his face. She realises that Michael had come back from the dead to take his revenge on her and her father.
The film ends with a twist that reveals that Michael was actually a ghost all along who had died in a car accident before meeting Anu. He had possessed the body of a pizza delivery boy named Karthik who had come to deliver pizza to Anu's house. He had fallen in love with Anu and had taken over her life. He had also killed Karthik's girlfriend Nithya and made it look like a suicide.
Anu and Shanmugam were actually paranormal investigators who had come to expose Michael's ghost and free Karthik's soul. They had staged the whole horror drama in the bungalow to scare Michael out of Karthik's body. However, they had underestimated Michael's power and cunningness. Michael had turned the tables on them and killed them both.
The film ends with Michael saying "I love you Anu" as he drags her into the car and drives away.
