Plot Summary
The film begins with Avinash (Rajkummar Rao), a former translator at the Japanese Embassy in India, visiting a temple with his family, where he meets Naina (Rakul Preet Singh), a beautiful and independent woman who runs a coffee shop. Avinash is instantly smitten by her, but he is too shy and tongue-tied to express his feelings. He decides to write her an anonymous love letter, but it accidentally reaches her mother Rukmini (Hema Malini), who is depressed and lonely after separating from her husband Tilak (Kanwaljeet Singh).
Rukmini is overjoyed by the letter, and thinks that she has a secret admirer. She decides to find out who he is, and asks Naina for help. Naina, who is annoyed by the letter, realizes that it can be a way to cheer up her mother. She asks Avinash to pretend to be the secret lover for a few days, until she can find a suitable match for her mother. Avinash agrees, hoping that he can win Naina's heart in the process.
However, things get complicated when Rukmini falls in love with Avinash, and Naina starts to feel jealous of their relationship. Avinash also finds out that Naina was not interested in him at all, and that she was just using him to make her mother happy. He decides to leave Naina, but confesses his true feelings before leaving. Rukmini also realizes that Avinash loves Naina, and that Naina loves him too. She decides to reunite them, and comes up with a plan to make Naina realize her mistake.
The plan involves sending Naina a fake wedding invitation from Avinash, which shocks and saddens her. She rushes to stop the wedding, and confesses her love to Avinash. Avinash reveals that he was not actually going to marry anyone, and that it was all a trick by Rukmini to bring them together. He accepts Naina's proposal, and they hug each other. Rukmini is happy for them, and also reconciles with Tilak, who has realized his mistake and wants to get back with her. The film ends with Avinash and Naina getting married, and Rukmini and Tilak renewing their vows.
